TEHRAN Two Majlis deputies, speaking to the TEHRAN TIMES, commented on the impeachment of the Culture and Islamic Guidance Minister Ataollah Mohajerani. The petition by a group of MPs to impeach Mohajerani will be discussed in the Majlis open session on Saturday, May 1. The motion was recently serious action to counter press violations and questioning the performance of the Judiciary. The Majlis deputy from Zahedan, Sistan-Baluchestan Province, Abbasali Noura told the TEHRAN TIMES that the call made by Majlis representatives to impeach Mohajerani was a cultural move.
He said, The impeachment is a repercussion of the measures so far taken by the ministry under Mohajerani. He described as serious the problems besetting the ministry saying that the current cultural status of the country is a source of concern and dismay for the Islamic Republic of Iran's authorities. Regarding the possibility of winning the vote of confidence by Mohajerani, he said with regard to the concern of Majlis and people and also the opposition of majority of representatives, he believes that Mohajerani will not win the vote of confidence.
Asked if impeached Mohajerani will be appointed as the next mayor, he said if Mohajerani continues his policies, he will not enjoy the support of people and the law, but, if he admits that he has made some mistakes his service would be welcomed by all. In another interview with the TEHRAN TIMES, the Majlis Deputy from Qouchan, Mohammad Baqer Zakeri, said that the impeachment of the guidance minister is a mere political move.
Substantiating his comment, he said the impeachment motion was not presented in the recent closed-door session of the Majlis. There are certainly some shortcomings in the ministry but it would have not led to impeachment of the minister. In the next Majlis session during which Mohajerani is to be impeached, he will answer the questions, he said expressing hope that the answers would be the main factor for winning the vote of confidence not the political stances so far taken before the session." He said that Mohajerani will likely win the vote.
On the future post of Mohajerani in case he is sacked, Zakeri said Mohajerani will continue his activities. He is qualified enough to run the Tehran Municipality. He may also run for the next presidential election if President Mohammad Khatami will not be a nominee for the elections. The participation of Mohajerani will also be a source of strength for the sixth Majlis, he stressed.
A group of people who introduced themselves as the Hezbollah of the eastern and southeastern Tehran signed a scroll yesterday in protest to the policies adopted by Mohajerani. They called on Majlis representatives not to give vote of confidence to the guidance minister.
